The Myth Of Safe Sex
In one
study conducted by promoters of condom use, more than 13% of unmarried
teenagers became pregnant in the first year they used condoms for
contraception.
|
 |
|
Sex
is synonymous to risk!
It's true. Every
time you have sex with anyone other than your lifelong spouse, you risk
pregnancy and disease. Some studies have shown condoms as
effective means for reducing that risk, but nothing has eliminated that
risk. When you stop and think about that, it makes you wonder
where the term Safe Sex came from. Doesn't it sound
like a Madison Avenue sales pitch for a term that should more
accurately read Somewhat less risky sex!

Condoms have a
10-15% failure rate at preventing pregnancy.
(source: Surgeon General, US Public Health Service,
JAMA 1993 June)
Keep in mind that there are only 3-5 days per month a woman can
actually become pregnant. The 10-15% failure rate is based on all
usage, not just the 3-5 days the condom is actually supposed to do its
job. Imagine how high the failure rate for just holding back
seminal fluids must really be.
Now consider sexually
transmitted diseases. You can catch STD's almost any time. The
virus that causes AIDS is 1/25th the size of a sperm (meaning it can
slip through tears and gaps that much easier. Now how safe does
safe sex sound?
|
|
All the press
coverage of AIDS along with the media neglect of other STDs has lead
many people to believe that the others have been cured. Nothing
could be farther from the truth. Many other STDs are actually
more common than AIDS. Some are cured easily if caught in
time. Others are still incurable! Here are just a few to
consider:

My partner would
tell me if he had a disease.
Most sexually transmitted
diseases have latency periods with symptoms are not visible. Some
latency periods are over one year long, and some even have been
estimated to have latency periods that could last up to 10 years.
The point is, most people don't even know that they have contracted an
STD, let alone that they are spreading it to another person.
Some data
suggests that condoms along with the safe sex myth that surrounds them
actually lead to greater problems.
On May 19, 1992, USA
Today released a story about a progressive Colorado school that began
freely distributing condoms. Since the start of the program, the
school's birth rate grew to 31% greater than the national
average. Administrators were described as searching for
explanations. One conclusion which they do not seem to have
arrived at is that condoms encouraged more students to become sexually
active because they believed the product would make sex safe.
What they found out instead was that condoms make sex less risky.
The students who found themselves with unwanted pregnancies probably
didn't like the odds, even with condoms.
You are not a
number!
Here's the point.
The people who thought up all this safe sex talk and who espouse it
most ardently have done so with the macroscopic mindset. They
have looked at our society as a mass of disease carriers in the face of
an epidemic and have approached the problem with a mathematical point
of view. They probably are also thinking of you as an animal who
will be unable to resist the biological temptation to have sexual
gratification - even at the risk of death.
The Caring
Pregnancy Center believes that you are a more noble being than
that. You can reduce your risk of unwanted pregnancy and disease
to zero. There are more caring ways to express your love for
someone that sex. Abstinence shows you care for yourself and for
your loved ones. Wait until you find one life partner, and, until
then, make abstinence part of your answer to a more peaceful and
healthy life.
